LIBERAL DEMOCRATS IN ROEHAMPTON
9th October 2005
Overview
Roehampton lies between Putney to the east, Barnes to the north, Richmond Park to the west and Kingston to the south. It borders the boroughs of Kingston and Richmond-upon-Thames. It is geographically the biggest ward in the borough, but it is actually mainly covered by parks with Putney Heath, Wimbledon Common, the Roehampton Golf Club and Putney Vale cemetery.
Roehampton was the site of major council-house deelopment after World War II: around 10,000 people are now housed on the sprawling Alton Estate which runs along the edge of Richmond Park. Nearly 50% of the housing is rented from the council with the estates of Lennox, Woking Close and Putney Vale.
In contrast, much of the old village of Roehampton still remains with picturesque cottages; this is a much more affluent area, dominated by large semi-detached houses.
