DEVELOPMENT BENEFIT FOR ALL RESIDENTS; JOINED-UP DELIVERY OF SOCIAL SERVICES
ENRICHING THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT
13th September 2005
A healthy local community benefits all residents. This
is affected by Council action in a series of areas
from planning to housing, amenities and social services.
The council should look beyond short-term pressures from property developers and narrowly-defined performance targets.
Liberal Democrats will fight for:
Ensuring that new developments enhance the environment for the benefit of all residents, and make provision for affordable homes for community workers.
Close scrutiny of housing services and clear accountability to and partnership with local residents.
Cost-effective but adequate social service provision, properly co-ordinated across all relevant agencies.

Local Lib Dems fight against devastating Tory cuts
Once again, Wandsworth’s Conservatives have made devastating cuts to our public services.
£2.7m is being cut from the Social Services budget. This means that frail and elderly people will no longer have the help they need with everyday activities, such as shopping and cleaning.
“As usual, the Tories have picked on the most vulnerable section of society”, said Shona Ferrier of the Southfields Focus Team.
“The local elections are coming up next Spring. All the Tories care about is having enough cash to spend on an election tax cut to make sure they stay in power. The way they are treating people is a disgrace.”
Dumped rubbish - local Liberal Democrats call for action!
All over the Southfields area, more and more dumped rubbish is piling up. The local Lib Dem team is calling on the council to do more to stop this growing menace. “This is more evidence that the Southfields Tory councillors care nothing for this area. Decent local councillors would notice this kind of thing and do something about it!” said local Lib Dem Adam Towner.
Lib Dems are here to help!
Let us know of any areas where rubbish has been dumped in the street, and we will make sure something is done about it. We are here to help!
Southfields residents are asking “what are our current Conservative councillors doing for us? Why aren’t they dealing with these local problems?”
If we are elected on 4 May, we will always put local needs first.
Education: real choices for residents
Secondary education is in crisis. In Wandsworth the few schools cannot cope with the very large numbers applying to them. Government reforms, with enthusiastic Conservative support, risk making a bad situation worse, by encouraging more local schools to take on pupils from outside the borough.
School admission policies developed without reference to local needs will reduce the real choices for local residents.
As Liberal Democrats, we believe that fairness in schooling is vital to our society’s future. Children should be able to go to their local school, and all local schools meet high standards. There should be no such thing as a “failing” school. If their parents choose, children should also be able to go to a more distant school - but priority must be to ensure that a good local school is available to all.
We believe in choice, but it must be in the context of good local provision.
Liberal Democrats will fight for:
High teaching and achievement standards across all the Borough’s schools.
School admission policies that meet local needs and increase the ability of local residents to choose a local community school.
Increased secondary school places.
