THE BOROUGH’S STREETS

9th April 2006

Back to the Brighter Borough

Wandsworth no longer deserves its title of the Brighter Borough. Roads and pavements are deteriorating. Streets are often disfigured by rubbish. This is more than hazardous and unsightly: such matters set the tone of an area, and deterioration can set off a vicious circle of declining civic pride. But the current Council is reluctant even to admit that there is a problem.

Liberal Democrats will fight for:

-  A full audit of pavements and streets, showing where all maintenance issues exist, not just those reported by members of the public.

-  An efficiently organised and properly funded maintenance programme.

-  A civic campaign of zero-tolerance against litter and fly-tipping, involving schools and community groups. Everybody can help - let’s restore civic pride!

-  More vigorous action against fly-tippers.
